What are your pets eating today? Are the ingredients in their dog treats natural? Are they healthy? Many products claim to be “healthy,” but it is up to us, as pet parents, to check labels and make sure that our definitions of “healthy” and commercial definitions agree. Often they will not. And, what to do then? Do we search for other commercial alternatives? Do we make our own doggy dinners? Feeding our pets can be confusing, not to mention time-consuming. But, as pet parents, we make the effort because we love them—something I have happily learned 100-fold since becoming a doggy “step-mom” to Bubba and Bucky.
When I originally moved to Cleveland in December 2007, I had absolutely no experience with dogs, other than knowing I absolutely preferred cats. Mark had two dogs, Bubba and Bucky, seven and six, respectively, two Jack Russell mixes who were going nowhere, so it was up to me to decide if I was ready for dog ownership—a bigger question for me than whether or not I was ready to settle down in Cleveland with Mark.
It didn’t take me long to fall in love with both Bubba and Bucky, and to recognize their unique personality traits. Bubba was a loving, wise, laid-back old soul, while Bucky was the spirited, self-concerned, conniving younger brother who seemed to live to torment his big brother. Bubba was the “mothering” type, and was always cleaning up this “young pup,” and letting him think he was getting his way while surreptitiously guiding Bucky in the direction he needed to go—much like any good parent will do. It truly was something to see, and I learned a lot from their loving, if sometimes contentious, relationship.
I was amazed to find that Mark actually cooked dinner for Bubba and Bucky each night—boneless, skinless chicken breasts, no less. But, he explained to me that, following the well-reported dog food scare in the United States, he didn’t trust commercial makers and really started looking at what his dogs were having for supper each evening. What he found was that they were getting a lot of fillers and chemical preservatives, often including BHA and/or BHT. At that point, Mark began cooking dinner for the two each evening—an unselfish act that I truly admired.
